Shadowing a PA, doctor, dentist, or other medical professional is vital to understanding the profession and their day-to-day tasks. You will witness patient care, teamwork among staff, and be able to ask questions about their schooling. The experience can also tell you whether you would like to continue your journey towards a certain profession, or if you do not like the occupation. It is better to figure it out now than during or after the schooling!
Additionally, many schools require 20-50 hours of shadowing to show commitment and understanding to the field. Being able to shadow different specialties also highlights your dedication and will strengthen your application.
How to find a PA to shadow:
Start by reaching out to anyone in your inner circle- family, friends, and classmates. Having a connection is great for securing a shadowing opportunity, but don’t stress if this does not lead to anything.
A second option is to do research on the clinics and hospitals near you and cold call them. Find a PA or other medical professional in your area, then call their workplace to express interest in shadowing them. Tell them your name, phone number, year in school, and that you are interested in shadowing [insert medical professional name] to better understand the PA profession. You can also give them your email and ask for theirs so you can check up to see if the PA is willing to let you shadow them. Your tone and the way you present yourself will significantly impact the results.  Â
Another option is to walk into clinics or hospitals to talk directly to the front desk. You can give them the same information as above and leave them your contact information. Showing up in person can show your determination and persistence towards shadowing a medical professional.
Your first time shadowing a doctor, PA, or other medical professional can be daunting, so having an idea of questions you can ask can help lessen your anxiety. You will be able to gain insight from the medical professional’s answers to determine if the career is the right path for you. I would recommend getting to know them on a personal level as well! You want to create a relationship with them, so you feel comfortable asking them for a letter of recommendation when it comes time to apply.
